Flower Hats Award Criteria
(Equivalent of STA Starfish Series)
These awards should be performed with the guardian in the water supporting the baby. Babies head should be supported at all times. Baby should feel safe throughout.
Flower Hats 1
CRITERIA:
Your child has been introduced to the water, teacher and surroundings
You have supported your child on their front and allowed them to move freely around the pool
You have supported your child on their back and allowed them to move freely around the pool
You have used our cue “name, ready, sprinkle” to introduce drops of water over their head
Flower Hats 2
CRITERIA:
You have demonstrated to your child how to blow bubbles in the water
Your child recognises our cue “name, ready, splash” and can flop into the water from sitting after hearing their cue
Your child has started to use reaching arms to retrieve a toy in the water
Your child has been introduced to buoyancy aids, ie pool noodles
Flower Hats 3
CRITERIA:
Your child is comfortable rolling from front to back in the side hold
Your child is comfortable rolling from back to front in the side hold
Your child is familiar with our cue “hold on, hold on” to hold on to the wall
Your child has started to travel around the pool by holding on to the wall with your support
Flower Hats 4
CRITERIA:
Your child can jump in from standing after hearing our cue “name, ready, splash!”
Your child has started to perform a leg kick action on their front
Your child has started to perform a leg kick action on their back
Your child has attempted to blow bubbles in the water
Flower Hats 5
CRITERIA:
Your child can enter the water safely with your support
Your child has started to swim independently on a noodle with your support
Your child is happy to swim on their back with their ears under the water with your support
Your child can perform a jump in the water and submerge (child-led)
Your child can climb out of the water safely with your support
BLUE BUTTON AWARD
(Equivalent of STA StaNLEY SERIES)
No accompanying adults are allowed in the pool for these awards. Children must perform these skills under the supervision of a qualified swimming teacher.
BLUE BUTTON 1
CRITERIA:
You have demonstrated how to enter the water safely
You can confidently blow bubbles in the water
You can swim on a noodle on your front with/without assistance from your teacher
You can swim on a noodle on your back with/without assistance from your teacher
You have demonstrated how to exit the water safely
BLUE BUTTON 2
CRITERIA:
You have demonstrated a front paddle action with your arms.
You have performed a push and glide on your front
You have performed a push and glide on your back
You can jump in to the water with/without assistance from your teacher
BLUE BUTTON 3
CRITERIA:
You can answer 3 questions on water safety
You have performed a star float on your back
You have demonstrated a roll from front to back
You have demonstrated a log roll
You can confidently put your face in the water
BLUE BUTTON 4
CRITERIA:
You can demonstrate a submersion
You have an understanding of how to perform front crawl arms
You have an understanding of how to perform back crawl arms
You have been introduced to breast stroke arms and legs
You can perform the three types of treading water on a noodle
BLUE BUTTON 5
CRITERIA:
You can swim front crawl to a high standard for 5 metres or more
You can swim back crawl to a high standard for 5 metres or
You have shown an understanding of how to perform breaststroke
You can tread water for 5 seconds or more
You have been introduced to a dolphin leg kick
MOON JELLI AWARD
(Equivalent of STA GOLDFISH SERIES)
This series is the natural progression from Blue Buttons.
MOON JELLI 1
CRITERIA:
You have been introduced to head first sculling
You have demonstrated rhythmical breathing in front crawl with a float
You have retrieved an object from the bottom of the pool
You can swim breaststroke to a high standard
MOON JELLI 2
CRITERIA:
You have performed dolphin leg kick for 10 metres or more
You can demonstrate a surface dive
You have been introduced to feet first sculling
You can swim 25 metres of a recognised stroke of your choic
MOON JELLI 3
CRITERIA:
You can swim 50 metres of a recognised stroke
You can tread water for 60 seconds or more
You have performed all strokes to a high standard
You have completed your first timed swim
